Thuy Duong and her son cooked a big pot of Chung cakes on January 27. Her family put a stove using wood pieces at the corner of the lane in front of their house in Binh Thanh District.
"We always cook Chung cakes for Tet, which I think is a good tradition to preserve," Duong said. "Our children are eager to join us in preparing the cakes."
Pham Van Tuoc's family in Tan Binh District also cooked 25 Chung cakes for Tet.
"We've had peach blossoms and a bonsai kumquat tree to decorate our house, now we're having Chung cakes and are ready to welcome Tet," Tuoc said.
Tuoc shared that although making Chung cakes is time-consuming, all his family members enjoy helping with the work, which may take a day, including washing the leaves, preparing ingredients, and boiling the cakes.
"We only prepare the cakes once a year on Tet, so it creates a special and warm atmosphere. It's time for a family reunion."
In Binh Thanh District's Ward 22, a group of people cooked 40 Chung cakes to give to disadvantaged people in the area.
A group member, Nguyen Van Cuong, said that they decided to give Chung cakes as Tet gifts to some people with financial difficulties.
"The gifts may be small, but we think they will be meaningful during this time," Cuong said.
