On Monday evening, many flights from the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian countries landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
Thousands of people waited for many hours at the airport to pick up their relatives.
Nguyen Vu Loc and his five brothers and sisters came to pick up their brother who was returning from the US. "My brother hasn't visited Vietnam for six consecutive years so we're all eager to meet him," Loc said.
A couple from the southern province of An Giang were happy to see their daughter who returned from Australia.
"This is the first time my daughter has come back home for Tet after studying in Australia for three years," the couple said. "We and some of her friends had waited at the airport for six hours to welcome her back."
Tan Son Nhat International Airport's T2 terminal has become more crowded as Tet is nearing, especially at night when more flights arrive between 10 pm-12 am.
The airport is expected to serve 26,000 flights with four million passengers during the Tet Lunar New Year holiday from January 14-February 12, including 1.50 million international passengers and 2.50 million domestic passengers, up 6.25 percent in the number of flights and 5.36 percent in number of passengers compared to the same period last year.
