Soc Trang ​resident ​hands ​over ​rare 100kg ​albino ​python

Dong Tam Snake Farm, under Military Zone 9 in Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province, received a giant Burmese python from a resident of Soc Trang Province​ on March 2.

Dong Tam Snake Farm receives a giant Burmese python from a resident of Soc Trang Province​ on March 2, 2025.

The python, measuring approximately 5 metres in length and weighing nearly 100 kilograms, was identified as an albino Burmese python (Python bivittatus). It belongs to Group IIB in the rare and endangered forest animal list.

The python had been kept as a pet for an extended period. However, due to its increasing size, its owner donated it to Dong Tam Snake Farm for conservation and breeding purposes.

Luong Minh Hai, a Dong Tam Snake Farm staff member, confirmed that the python was in good health upon arrival and had quickly adapted to its new environment. This species primarily feeds on hoofed animals, birds, chickens, ducks, and rodents. They typically lay between 12 and 48 eggs, with an incubation period of two to three months. Burmese pythons have an average lifespan of around 25 years and can reach a weight of approximately 100 kilograms.

The strikingly large and beautiful python has quickly become a significant attraction for Dong Tam Snake Farm visitors.

Dong Tam Snake Farm is one of the leading reptile conservation and breeding centres in the Mekong Delta region. It plays a crucial role in preserving Vietnam's rare reptile species. The facility currently houses and conserves thousands of snakes across more than 40 species, including some of the world's most venomous and rarest snakes.

In addition to its reputation for breeding and conserving snakes, Dong Tam Snake Farm operates a dedicated treatment centre for snakebite victims. It is also a unique and popular tourist destination in Tien Giang Province, attracting domestic and international visitors.
