Ha Tinh struggles to cope with dying mangrove forest

Around 25 hectares of mangrove forest in the central province of Ha Tinh have withered for years. However, no reforestation efforts have been undertaken until now.

The mangrove forest in Ky Ha Commune, Ky Anh Town, has been dying since 2022. This has caused a sharp fall in aquatic resources and posed a severe threat to the weakened Hai-Ha-Thu dyke system.

According to Dao Duc Giang, Head of the Ky Anh Town Forest Protection Unit, white mangroves are the most affected trees in the forest.

Ha Tinh struggles to cope with dying mangrove forest - 1

The mangrove forest in Ky Ha Commune, Ky Anh Town, has been dying since 2022

The initial assessment indicated that soil and climate conditions may have contributed to the mangrove die-off. Giang added that the area has been suffering from prolonged seawater inundation, with salinity levels exceeding the trees’ tolerance threshold.

However, to identify the exact cause, it is necessary to invite senior experts in forestry and mangrove ecosystems to conduct on-site surveys, in-depth studies, assessments, and scientific testing for evidence-based conclusions.

The Ky Anh Town Forest Protection Unit implemented a project to use the small-leafed mangrove tree in the area, but it failed, so the project has remained unfinished.

Local authorities have asked concerned agencies to define the underlying cause of the widespread mangrove die-off in Ky Ha Commune to reach suitable resolutions.
