The Kien Giang Province People's Council approved the conversion on April 28. Specifically, around 83.17 hectares of special-use forest in Ganh Dau and Cua Can communes, Phu Quoc City, will be reclassified for tourism use.

The land will accommodate projects such as Green Hill Eco-Tourism Area (71.88 hectares), Rach Nhum (10.47 hectares), and Rach Vem (0.82 hectares).

According to the proposal submitted by the provincial people's committee, tourism is a key sector in Phu Quoc's development strategy. Investing in eco-tourism and resort projects aims to create a high-end tourism complex.

Lam Minh Thanh, Chairman of the provincial people's council, stated that the land area had already been removed from forest planning and approved by the Prime Minister.

"We're now moving forward with project implementation using the required legal procedures. It's not a case of seizing forest land at this stage," Thanh emphasised.

Phu Quoc National Park covers 36,262 hectares and features three forest ecosystems: evergreen broadleaf forest, Melaleuca forest, and mangrove forest. The park is home to nearly 1,400 species of plants and about 480 species of animals.
