Rare animals discovered at central nature reserve

Camera traps have detected many rare animals at a nature reserve in the central provinces of Ha Tinh and Quang Binh.

According to the management board of Ke Go Nature Reserve, as many as 88 camera traps have been placed in the reserve, helping to identify 19 mammal species, 13 bird species, and one reptile species.

The list of 19 mammal species recorded includes the striped rabbit, red-bellied squirrel, macaque, mole rat, black squirrel, civet, crab-eating civet, wildcat, chevrotain, masked civet, wild boar, red-bellied squirrel, rat, golden monkey, deer, northern silver marten, leopard cat, wild pig, and yellow-throated marten.

Meanwhile, the 13 bird species recorded include the striped-breasted pheasant, barred-tail pheasant, and black-winged kite.

Many of these animals are listed in the Vietnam and global Red Lists as endangered, rare, and protected species. Hunting, exploitation, and illegal trade of these species are prohibited, and they must be prioritised for protection and conservation.

The Ke Go Nature Reserve covers nearly 45,000 hectares and extends across Cam Xuyen, Ky Anh, Huong Khe, and Thach Ha in Ha Tinh and Tuyen Hoa District in Quang Binh.

The reserve is home to a diverse and rich range of wildlife and plant species, including many rare species. Until now, the reserve has recorded 80 mammal species, 298 bird species, 63 reptile species, 33 amphibian species, 302 insect species, and 35 fish species.
