A cluster munition left over from the American War is found in Quang Tri Province.
Hoang Thi Tinh, a 51-year-old resident of Rao Truong Hamlet in Ben Quan Commune, recently discovered the first device. Tinh found a suspicious round object near the local community centre and kindergarten and immediately notified local authorities.
Upon inspection, NPA technicians identified the item as a BLU-61 cluster bomb. The munition was safely neutralised on-site.
Around the same time, another cluster bomb was found in a garden of acacia trees in Dong Ha Ward. The NPA team responding to the report located not just one but two unexploded devices hidden beneath the trees. Both were safely disposed of.
According to NPA, cluster munitions pose a serious threat to civilian lives long after conflicts have ended. Quang Tri remains one of the most heavily bombed provinces in Vietnam due to its location along the former demilitarised zone during the war.
In the first six months of 2025 alone, NPA's mobile EOD teams responded to 175 emergency calls via their hotline and safely destroyed 331 explosive remnants of war.
