The low barriers that HCM City's authorities installed to stop drivers driving on pavements have proved ineffective and are actually posing a danger to pedestrians.

In order to stop drivers from running on pavements during rush hours, which is a common problem in big cities like Hanoi and HCM City, the city authorities have installed low barriers on some pavements in District 1. However, this solution has proven to be ineffective.

One week after the barriers were installed, the number of vehicles did decrease even though some still tried to get through. However, the barriers proved obstacles to disabled people and often tripped up unaware pedestrians. For pregnant women and blind people, the barriers were the extremely dangerous traps.

In fact, many locals, as well as tourists were upset when the barriers were installed.

Some drivers still tried to get through

The authorities hadn't thought about the inconvenience and danger that the barriers would pose to the people. It seems like they have only focused on implementing the project without considering the reports and feedback. They had only thought about the conveniences it brings to the city managers without calculating how it would impact people's daily lives.

This can be considered as a failure in urban transport planning.

There are already regulations that force drivers to go in the correct lanes, yet instead of tightened management and more effort on monitoring, the authorities have implemented an unreasonable plan. They are trying to push their difficulties onto the people.

Many people hope that the authorities of HCM City will see that the plan's shortcomings and remove the barriers.
