Bui Thi Nga, 41, hugged her ailing son Trinh Viet Tuan in her arms while he was moaning in pain. The mother and son have just returned to the National Cancer Hospital in Hanoi after his condition worsened.
"He has started having a fever and more pain again for several days, but it's not until now that I gathered enough money to take him to the hospital again," the mother said in tears. "I'm apprehensive that his condition might have become more serious."
Nga said that her son has developed fevers and a sizeable painful tumour in the spine last May. He then lost his ability to walk in just a few days later. She brought her son to various hospitals before being introduced to the National Cancer Hospital in Hanoi, where doctors said that he had Ewing sarcoma, a rare type of cancer.
"We've been spending more time in the hospital than at home since, and Tuan has had to undergo both radiation therapy and chemotherapy," Nga said. "He used to be a very active boy who loved to play football, but now he can't even walk. Doctors said that he would need long and costly treatment, but we've been running out of money."
The woman said that she and her husband earn a modest income from repairing agricultural tools for farmers in the area. They have to support their elderly parents and two small children.
"We've spent all our small savings to cover treatment for Tuan and have had to borrow over VND200 million more from relatives and friends and can't borrow more," she said. "I hope to receive support from people to continue treatment for my son."
Doctor Tran Hai Nam from the National Cancer Hospital said that Trinh Viet Tuan was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, which is a type of cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the bones and the soft tissue around the bones.
"The cancer has affected lots of vertebrae, making him unable to walk," the doctor said. "He has undergone surgery, 25 doses of radiation therapy and 18 doses of chemotherapy. He may need more treatment, which would be very costly. Both his parents have low income, so we hope that Tuan will receive support from kind donors to continue his treatment."
