On Feb. 23, the DTiNews office in the central province of Nghe An handed over VND4,500,000 ($234) to 5 orphans who lost their parents.

The story was first reported in January, and since then money has been donated by many readers. Nguyen Thi Lien, grandmother of the orphans, feels touched by the kind hearts that have pitched in to help.

She said told DTiNews, “Nowadays, my 5 grandchildren receive care from compassionate people. I will try my best to encourage them to continue their studies.”

Her family has received about VND80 million ($4,168) from donors. She will save this money in the bank to help support them in the future.

In November 2009, their parents passed away suddenly and tragically after an accident. They left 5 kids behind, and only their elderly grandmother can care for them. They are Tran Van Son, 17; Tran Thi Mai, 15; Tran Van Viet, 11; Tran Van Linh, 10 and Tran Thi Linh, 8.

“Their parents died unexpectedly. They became orphans. They live on support from kind neighbours and relatives. But I am too old to take care of them. I will try my best to raise them,” said their grandmother Nguyen Thi Lien through tears.

Son, the oldest child, cannot earn money because his family doesn’t have any land to grow rice and he doesn’t have a job.

“We encourage them to continue their studies and don’t charge them any fees. We hope they don't have to leave school,” said Le Thi Thanh Huyen, Vice Principal of Nghi Phu School, “We also provide them with food for lunch at school. They need help from kind hearts.”
