Australian and Vietnamese experts gathered in Hanoi on Wednesday for the inaugural Vietnam State of Energy Transition (VSET) Conference.

Delegates from policy-makers, government agencies, business and energy institutions participating in the conference.

The one-day conference served as a forum, drawing on Australian experience in developing its power sector, as well as conducting policy analysis and recommending practical pathways for Vietnam to achieve a reliable, affordable, and decarbonised electricity system, aligned with Vietnam’s Power Development Plan 8 (PDP8).

The conference was organised as part of the Future of Electricity in Vietnam (FE-V) programme launched in 2022 by the Australian Government with the coordination and participation of the Vietnamese Communist Party’s Central Economic Commission (CEC) and Vietnamese key energy agencies to deepen links between the two countries.

Speaking at the conference, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Andrew Goledzinowski, said that Australia and Vietnam had so much to share with each other about managing energy transitions.

"The Vietnam State of Energy Transition conference is a platform for us to have these frank conversations, informed by insights and reflections on what we are doing well, and not so well, in Australia,” he said.

At the side discussions of the conference, Deputy Director General in charge of Industry Department of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Economic Commission, Nguyen Ngoc Trung, highlighted that the Future of Electricity in Vietnam (FE-V) was a meaningful initiative of the Australian Embassy in Vietnam in the context of the robus on-going transition.

"The research results under FE-V have provided good reference to inform relevant stakeholders in the energy sector suitable solutions for Vietnam’s energy transition process," he said. "The VSET Conference is a significant milestone in the implementation journey of the FE-V since 2022.”

Trung noted that the conference would not only showcase these outcomes but also served as a platform to strengthen connections between public and private sector stakeholders from the two countries.

The conference also saw the attendance of Vice Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hoang Long, former CEO of Australian Energy Market Operator, Audrey Zibelman, and Board Member, Australian Energy Regulator, Jarrod Ball.
