Divers collect rubbish from Con Dao coral reefs

Scuba divers have gathered large amounts of rubbish trapped on coral reefs off Con Dao Island in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

According to Con Dao National Park, scuba divers picked up around 2.1 tonnes of litter discarded across roughly 600 hectares of reefs off the island since late July.

Nets and ropes account for the majority of the waste. Scissors were used to remove them from coral reefs.

Divers used cameras to survey the underwater area and identify coral reefs covered by waste. They then cleared the reefs and brought the waste ashore.

The waste also included beer and soft drink cans, which were collected and put into bags.

Waste also affected the sandy beaches and mangrove forests in Con Dao.

Voluntary forces have also been mobilised for the waste cleanup campaign in Con Dao.

The collected litter is taken to Con Son Island to be handled.
