A fertilizer company in the southern province of Long And has been fined VND312 million (USD12,259) for discharging untreated wastewater into the environment.
A Hung Nong Ltd. Co., located in Thanh Hoa District, discharged wastewater exceeding the technical standards into La Khoa Canal.
The wastewater from the canal then flowed into other canals. These canals provide water for hundreds of hectares of rice and pineapple fields.
The wastewater from the fertilizer firm has also spilt onto a local household's pond.
Test results found that suspended solids exceeded limits by nearly 100 times, with total phosphorus 44 times over and BOD5 and COD levels 2,000 times over their regulated levels.
A company representative claimed workers had accidentally damaged a pipeline, causing wastewater to flow into the environment.
The company was previously fined VND500 million for environmental pollution violations between 2019 and 2023.
