The Mozambique president and his entourage were welcomed at Noi Bai International Airport by Head of the President’s Office Le Khanh Hai, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Hang, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mozambique Pham Hoang Kim, along with other diplomats.

Nyusi’s visit is taking place at a time when the two countries are preparing to mark 50 years of their diplomatic relations (1975-2025).

During the visit, Nyusi is expected to meet with senior Vietnamese leaders, visit various businesses, educational institutions, and cultural and historical sites. Both sides will also sign key cooperation documents in areas of mutual interest and strength.

Vietnam and Mozambique established diplomatic relations on June 25, 1975. Vietnam opened its embassy in Mozambique in 1976, demonstrating its desire to develop the traditional friendship and cooperative relations with Mozambique in particular, and with other African countries in general.

Over the years, the traditional friendship and cooperative relations between the two countries have developed positively through numerous high-level visits between their leaders, including a Mozambique visit last year by Vice President of Vietnam Vo Thi Anh Xuan.

Both countries have signed many cooperation agreements across various fields, including political diplomacy, economics, trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, science and technology, telecommunications, health, education and training, culture, security and defense, finance, banking, and local cooperation.

They have established and maintained important cooperation mechanisms such as the Intergovernmental Committee and political consultations at the Deputy Foreign Minister level.

The two sides organized the fourth meeting of the Vietnam-Mozambique Intergovernmental Committee in the capital city of Maputo, reviewing and outlining new directions for cooperation. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in all areas, including economics, education, health, and security-defense.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation is a major pillar in bilateral relations. In 2023, their two-way trade reached US$546.4 million, including US$127 million worth of Vietnamese exports.

Vietnamese army-run telecom giant Viettel launched its mobile network in Mozambique under the brand Movitel, a US$600 million joint venture between Viettel and SPI, with Viettel holding a 70% stake.

In agriculture, from 2010 to 2014, Vietnam, Japan, and Mozambique implemented a trilateral agricultural project under South-South cooperation in provinces of Gaza and Zambezia – the two key agricultural regions of Mozambique.
