The pontoon bridge which was put into use after Phong Chau Bridge in Phu Tho Province collapsed on September 9, has been temporarily replaced by two military ferries due to the Red River’s rising water level.

The pontoon bridge was closed on October 1 because of the Red River’s increasing water level. This caused difficulties for many residents in the northern province of Phu Tho Province as they now must take a detour through Ngoc Thap Bridge, adding more than 10 kilometres to their journeys.

Under the instruction of Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang, the two ferries began operating from 2 pm today, October 4. Pedestrians, bicycles and motorbikes are allowed to use the ferries.

Military and police have been asked to work with local authorities to guide people.

In necessary cases, the military will mobilise canoes and backup tugboats to assist passengers.

The Phong Chau Bridge’s collapse left 13 dead and missing.

Phu Tho Province has proposed VND875 billion (USD35.71 million) to build the new Phong Chau Bridge.
