Ho Chi Minh City forecast to enter rainy season in early May

HCM City is expected to enter its rainy season in early May, with rainfall and temperatures forecast to exceed long-term averages, according to the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre.

The first week of May is forecast to mark the start of the rainy season in the city, although coastal areas may see rains arrive three to five days later.

Rainfall over the next three months is projected to range from near to above historical averages, while average temperatures are also expected to remain above normal. Heatwaves may persist into May but are forecast to gradually ease.

The seasonal transition is expected to bring a higher risk of thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning, strong winds and possible hail, while heavy localised rain may trigger flooding in low-lying areas and disrupt marine activities.

Rainfall in May is forecast at near to above average, with 15 to 20 rainy days expected, rising to 17 to 22 days in June and 18 to 23 days in July.

Temperatures in May, June and July are all projected to remain above long-term averages.

One to two tropical storms or depressions are forecast in the East Sea in June and July, broadly in line with historical norms. Most are expected to track northward but may still bring strong winds and adverse weather to Ho Chi Minh City and nearby waters.

Storm activity in the East Sea is expected to remain near average from August to October at around one to two systems a month, with October posing a risk of a storm or tropical depression affecting waters off Ho Chi Minh City.

Weather officials warned residents and authorities to prepare for heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, strong winds, flooding in low-lying areas and rough seas caused by intensified south-westerly monsoon conditions.
