As many as 142 teachers and students at a school in the northern province of Lao Cai narrowly avoided death after a hillside collapsed thanks to being evacuated.

The teachers and students are from Muong Hum Secondary and High School 3 in Bat Xat District.

Police in Bat Xat District surveyed the risks of landslides in the area during Typhoon Yagi and identified the school as high-risk.

On the morning of September 8, all 11 teachers and 131 students were evacuated from the school dormitories to shelter at a local nursery school. That night, the hillside behind the school suddenly collapsed, demolishing 16 of the school's dormitories.

Bat Xat is among the localities heavily impacted by flash floods and landslides following Typhoon Yagi.

Roads to Muong Hum and many other communities in Bat Xat have been cleared, making it easier for residents to transport necessities.

Previously, 115 people in a village in Lao Cai who had been reported missing returned safely after sheltering on a mountain for two days without electricity or telecommunications.
