Three girls have drowned while swimming in a river in the southern province of Phu Yen's Dong Xuan District.

The Dong Xuan District People's Committee announced on Friday afternoon that the incident occurred around 11 am the same day when the girls, one aged eight and two others aged ten, visited the Ha Nheo River to bathe.

The three became stranded in deep water and could not get out. Some other children saw them and ran to call for help, but all three girls were dead when a rescue team found them at 12.30 pm.

"The girls were from low-income families in the area, and we have sent condolences and some financial support to their parents following the incident," the committee said.

According to a report from the committee, nine children have drowned in the district since the summer holiday started this year.

Statistics from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs showed that some 2,000 children died from drowning in Vietnam every year. The number of rural child drownings was double that of urban areas, and 55 percent of drowned children were from families facing poverty.
