Ngoc Linh Ginseng is cultivated in the communes of Tra Linh, Tra Nam, Tra Cang, Tra Tap, Tra Don, Tra Leng, and Tra Vinh in Nam Tra My District, Quang Nam Province with the largest growing area in Tra Linh.
In Quang Nam, the ginseng grows wild on Ngoc Linh Mountain at 1,500-2,100 metres elevations under the canopy of ancient forests along moist, nutrient-rich streambanks.

Ngoc Linh Ginseng was discovered long ago by ethnic minority communities in Quang Nam, particularly the Xe Dang people in Nam Tra My District.
According to Ho Van Reu from Tra Linh Commune, since he was small, he had been told about the benefits of Ngoc Linh Ginseng and taught how to use it in many cases.
Up to 533 households across 7 out of 10 Nam Tra My District communes have cultivated Ngoc Linh Ginseng compared to 110 households in 2014.
Since October 2017, Nam Tra My has held a monthly market promoting Ngoc Linh Ginseng from first to third. This has helped improve the skills for local ginseng growers.
The district has completed forest land lease procedures for Ngoc Linh Ginseng cultivation on over 806 hectares so far.
