Twin girls suffering bone marrow deficiency for five years
Nguyen Yen Phuong and Nguyen Hai Phuong from Song Ai Commune’s Lai Ai Hamlet were diagnosed with inborn bone marrow deficiency. They were treated at the Central Pediatrics Hospital for two years and have been moved to the Central Hematology Institute for the last three years.
Their situation is now critical.
Doctors said they can be cured by bone marrow transplants using blood from an umbilical cord but their family can’t the afford the expense of the operations.
Their mother, Chu Thi Thuy Duong, 30, is now pregnant after following the doctors’ advice.
The parents are helpless
“We’ve advised Duong to have another baby, so we can use blood from the umbilical cord to conduct a transplant and save one of the girls and so the cost of treatment for the other would be reduced,” said Dr. Mai Lan who treats the girls at the institute.
Dr. Nguyen Anh Tri, director of the institute said, “This is a special case and we’ll subsidise the treatment of VND300 million to VND400 million (USD13,305-USD17,740). However, the treatment of the other girl would cost between VND800 million to VND1 billion (USD35,481-USD44,351).”
The mother has no earnings as she has to stay at home to take care of her daughters. Her husband is working but his earnings are just enough to support the whole family.
The family don’t know how to raise money for the bone marrow transplants.
