A family in Thai Binh Province is in desperate need of financial support to help three members suffering from serious diseases and keep a daughter in school so she can pursue her dreams of becoming a doctor.
Problems began for the family of Nguyen Thi Xiu and Tran Viet Chu, in Hamlet 6, Hung Ha District. They were happy when their first child, Tran Van Duong, was born in 1993. But he was found to have a congenital spinal deformity.
Doctors at Hung Ha District Hospital said the success rate of surgery was low, but Xiu and Chu borrowed money to give their son a chance. The surgery failed. Because of the paralysis, Duong has been mostly housebound for 22 years.

"My heart hurts when I see him like this, but we don't know what to do," Xiu said.

Duong's aunt has suffered mental illness since she was 20 years old. She often sits alone and talks to the windows. Sometimes, she has fits, destroys furniture and tries to run away.
All the housework and financial burdens fall on the shoulders of Xiu and Chu, who works as a casual brick-layer after retiring from the military because of an accident. His own health is deteriorating, but he still tries to go to work to support family.
"My daughter, Tran Thi Thao, is my only hope now, but we don't really know what our future will be," Xiu said.
Tran Thi Thao is in 10th grade and has earned some academic achievements. She also helps with housework and hopes to be a doctor to treat her own family members.

Nguyen Thi Xue, party secretary of Tay Do Commune, said, "The local authorities can only help so much. We hope the community will help their family so that at least Thao can continue her study, giving hope to this unfortunate family."
