Nong Thi Dieu, a 13-year-old Tay ethnic minority girl from Cao Bang Province, is in desperate need of help to receive a second heart surgery in order to survive.
Thuy in desperate need of second heart surgery
Born to a poor ethnic minority family in Lung Niec highlands hamlet the North-West, Dieu is currently undergoing treatment at the Hanoi-based Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital.
Even though doctors have set a date for Dieu’s surgery, she has yet to receive it because her family cannot afford the VND50 million (USD2,376) for medical fees.
Her family has already had to borrow tens of millions VND to pay for her first surgery. Now they struggle with the debt while trying to come up with funds for the second operation. At the same time having to pay for daily needs.
Family unable to take on more medical fees
Recently, Dieu’s condition became worse and was hospitalised after suffering from breathing problems and jaundice. Doctors said she suffers from valvular heart disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension and is in urgent need of surgery.
Now, after selling their only asset of value, a buffalo, the family has just VND5 million (USD237.7).
Nguyen Xuanh Vinh, a chief nurse at the hospital, said, "Dieu is in critical condition and needs to get this operation as soon as possible. At this point we have her on daily cardiotonics, but this is not a long-term solution. The valves of her heart need replacing.”
“We feel guilt and shame because we can't provide the medical care our little girl needs. We love her and don't want to live without her," said Hoang Thi Thoan, the little girl’s mother.
