An 11th-grader in the central province of Ha Tinh has suspended his studies so he can care for his paralysed grandmother and mentally-ill father.

Nguyen Anh Nhan’s mother left them and the family has struggled since he was small.
Nhan, who is himself sick with glomerulopathy, but cannot afford treatment. He has to care for his father, who suffers mental illness and is in hospital.
His grandmother, who recently became paralysed. A younger brother dropped out of Grade 10 to help earn money for the family. There is another younger brother who the boys are trying to raise on their own.
Despite his burdens, Nhan has tried to keep up his studies and was chosen to take the province’s exam for maths and chemistry in Grades 10 and 11. He won a scholarship to continue his studies.

Nhan’s head teacher, named Cuong, said the school was calling for donations to help Nhan’s family and keep him in school.
At hospital, caring for his father, Nhan eats instant noodles to save money to pay the hospital bills. Patients who share the room with his father help them sometimes to buy food.
Nhan wants to go back to school but he can't because he must find what work he can to support and care for his family.
