Ambassador Kgomotso Ruth Magau called on international communities in Vietnam and the Vietnamese people to help the disadvantaged, in pursuit of the aims of modern South Africa's founding president, who fought his entire life for solidarity, freedom and justice.

Mandela, who was born 97 years ago, spent 27 years in prison for fighting the apartheid system in South Africa, and for freedom and justice. He was released in 1990 due to pressure from the international community. He died in December 2013.

He was elected the first black president of South Africa from 1991 to 1997, and led his country to peaceful reconciliation with its past and paved the way for solidarity between blacks and whites in his country.

Magau urged Vietnamese to work together to fight poverty and help the disadvantaged.

In HCM City, the South African Consulate, in conjunction with the Vien Dong Assurance Joint Stock Co (VASS), gave rice, cooking oil and food to 20 elderly people and study equipment to 40 orphaned children at the Huyen Trang Charity Centre under Huyen Trang Pagoda.

Scholarships worth VND50m and two organs worth VND20m were given to a music class at Nguyen Dinh Chieu School for visually impaired students.
