Six year-old girl needs bone marrow deficiency treatment

A six-year-old girl in Vinh Long province has thirsted for the day when she can return school but her family cannot afford to provide her with efficient bone marrow treatment.

A six-year-old girl in the southern province of Vinh Long has thirsted for the day when she can return school but her family cannot afford to provide her with efficient bone marrow treatment.

Mai Thi Thuy Vy lives with her parents in a tent in Vam Lich Hamlet in Chanh An Commune. Her school refuses to receive her due to concerns over her health. Hospital is like a second home.

Bui Thi Quyen, Vy’s mother, said, “When Vy was a newborn she had livid bruises on her skin but we didn’t take her to the hospital due to the lack of money. She wasn’t hospitalised until her situation became critical.”

The family can’t afford the treatment

Mai Van Cuong, Vy’s father, said that when she had prolonged fever, she was taken to the Vinh Long provincial hospital and doctors there said she had dengue fever but treatment did not make sense. She then was taken to the HCM City-based Paediatrics Hospital 1 for more check-ups and was diagnosed to be suffering from bone marrow deficiency that caused septicaemia.

Cuong works as a fish farm worker and earns VND3 million (USD133,244) per month, which is just enough to support his family, let alone provide treatment for her daughter.

Doctors have advised Vy’s parents to take her to the Institute of Haematology for better treatment but they cannot afford medical fees. So Cuong decided to take her daughter home.

Doctor Nguyen Minh Tuan, from Paediatrics Hospital 1, said Vy should be provided with cell transplants to stimulate blood cell generation or with a marrow transplant.

Local official Nguyen Van Be Ty from the Vam Lich Hamlet of Chanh An Commune, said that Cuong’s family has temporarily lived in the commune for over a decade as they lack land. Their life has become more desperate since their daughter was ill.
