Dang Thi Tan, a Dao ethnic woman in Tan Son Village, said the disease was genetic and almost every member of her family is suffering.
"All four of my children have this illness, and my grandchildren," Tan said. "My children went to a hospital in Dong Hy District and were diagnosed with muscle atrophy,"
Family members need sticks to move around
Tan can hardly walk and her husband is blind.
The disease strikes the children after they turn 10, and they become so weak they cannot continue going to school.
Dang Thi Tu, one of Tan's daughters, said they wanted to go to hospitals in Hanoi to see if there was a cure for the children. "But we don't even have enough money for daily meals," she said.

Tran Van Truong, secretary of Tan Son Village, said, "Their family has been poor for generations because all the adult members have this illness and can't work. They are living on small allowances for disabled people. Local authorities can only help them so much since we have many poor households here. We hope the children can be cured to avoid similar fates like their parents."
