Dinh Trong Hop, and his wife, Doan Thi Luyen, live in Hamlet 3, in Quang Dinh Commune. They been married for over 20 years but could not have a baby.
After seeking medical treatment for years, they decided to adopt a baby boy who had been abandoned by his parents at the Thanh Hoa Obstetrics Hospital in 2011.
“When I first saw the baby, I was moved by his look. We decided to take care of him despite his ailments,”Hop said. They named the baby Dinh Trong Giap. Because of his premature birth, Giap was weak and had to stay in an incubator for 20 days.
The unlucky family
A few days after bringing him home, the couple had to take him back to the hospital for further treatment.
“When we found out Giap suffered from septicemia, we were very sad. Even though he was struggling to survive, we were always by his side and considered him our son,” the father said.
When the boy was two years old, he still could not speak or even smile. The couple took him to the hospital for medical, where doctors said he was deaf.

They discovered he could hear a little with the help of a hearing aid, and even started responding in gestures. “We were so happy when we could see our son could hear. Doctors said there are two solutions to his ailments. A surgery to place the hearing-aid inside his ears would cost VND1 billion. We can't afford that. We’re trying to work to earn money to buy him a hearing-aid that costs VND80 million,” the wife said.
They hope to buy the device before the Giap reaches school age.
