Thuy was born to a talented businessman, Nguyen Gia Thao, former general director of Hai Phong Leather and Footwear Company which is one of the biggest footwear firms in the north during the 1980s. Her father also took part in many social programmes to support the poor and disadvantaged people.

Thuy followed her father to continue the footwear business. She and her Thai husband, Mitrchaiyanant Chatchawat, set up the Golden Top Group and successfully run the business with factories in Hai Phong and several southern provinces and tens of thousands of workers.
Thuy said she was impressed by the business philosophy of GM Roach in his book The Diamond Cutter which says "You want to be good in business, you want to succeed in your life, but you also have a strong instinct that tells you life wouldn't be much unless it had a spiritual side to it."
The businesswoman has been known for her active participation in many charitable activities including building houses for poor people and schools in remote areas, giving presents to flood victims in the central province of Quang Binh, Agent Orange victims, and people in mountainous areas.
Last March, at the seventh For Humanity programme held by artist Le Phuong in HCM City, Thuy contributed VND100 million to the charity funds. At the event, she was honoured with the title of Community Ambassador.

Thuy has also provided financial support for the Nhan Tam House for homeless and disabled children founded by artist Le Phuong.Last year, Golden Top Group built four houses for four low-income families in the northern province of Yen Bai.

Golden Top Group, Sao Sang Group and the Nguyen Gia Thao Charity Fund have also offered Tet presents to poor people in Do Son District. Besides, Dinh Vang Group also pay regular visit to mental patients, orphaned children and homeless elderly people in Hai Phong City.
