University graduate Huy hit by leukaemia
Tran Thi Huong and her family live in Tam Lang Hamlet of Tan Son Commune in Kim Bang District.
She and her husband, Do Van Xa, have struggled all their married lives, starting by having to seek shelter in Huong's parents dilapidated house. They could not afford beds for their children, who sleep on planks. Xa cannot work due to circulation problems, and Huong suffers from uterine fibroid doctors say requires surgery, something the family cannot afford.
Mother feels helpless
"When my mother was informed that my older brother suffered from blood cancer she was dumbstruck," Huong's daughter said. "For several years, after the harvest, my parents would go to the South to sell lottery tickets to earn money to support my brother's university."
Huy was eager to graduate so he could start earning money to support his struggling family. But a month after his graduation, he became ill. Doctors diagnosed leukaemia last September.
"I was extremely shocked to know about my health status," Huy said.
"I'm not afraid of death but I feel as if the sky has fallen on me because I cannot repay the sacrifices my parents made for me," he said.
Huy really want to work to repay his parents' sacrifices
The family has no resources left to pay for Huy's treatment and there are still debts to repay despite having sold all their valuables and assets.
"Huong's family is a desperately poor case in the commune," Trinh Van Ngo, head of Tan Lam's hamlet, said.
"Luckily their children study really well. We do what we can. Sometimes, neighbours extend a helping hand by giving them some eggs or a little rice, but none of us are rich."
