Cerebral palsied children
Nguyen Thi Thang, 37, and her husband Chu Ba Quy, 41, live in Bac Lam Village of Dien Lam Commune in Dien Chau District.
Thang gave birth to their first daughter, Chu Thi Trang, in 1999. Trang was initially in good health, but she did not roll over when she was six months old. She was taken to the hospital for medical checks and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Their second daughter, Chu Thi Quynh, who was born in 2002, suffers mental problems and ill health, often needing medicine.
Two years later, Chu Thi Linh was born, but she too was found to have cerebral palsy.
Thang recently gave birth to the fourth child, but has little time to be a mother because of the demands of caring for her other three children.
Poor woman struggling to support her family
“Sometimes, I find myself nearly exhausted,” Thang said.
In order to provide their children with medical treatment, the couple had to mobilise all available resources, including borrowing from relatives and friends. Now they are financially exhausted.
“Linh’s situation has become worse recently. She cannot eat food. I don’t know how long she can get by,” Thang said.
Quy is a hired worker, and works in the fields and raises animals at home to earn extra cash.
Recently, he was diagnosed with a spinal problem and can no longer do heavy lifting jobs, and also need medicines.
“I feel helpless seeing my wife and our children living such hard conditions,” Quy said.
Le Xuan Hong, the chairman of the communal People’s Committee said, “Quy’s family has been living under the poverty line for years. We’ve provided them with some support, but that’s really modest.”
