Nguyen Thi Thom, 47, in Nghi Lam Commune in Nghi Loc District, is bedridden due to end-stage soft tissue sarcoma. Thom has undergone several surgeries and many radiation treatments, but her condition has not improved. The tumour on her right leg has turned necrotic, emitting a stench.

Recently, her husband, Nguyen Dinh Thong,49, met with a serious accident while on the way to buy medicines for Thom. Thong has undergone a traumatic brain injury and remained unconscious.
The couple's eldest son, Nguyen Dinh Vuong, 26, has become the family's central pillar. After graduating from the University of Transport and Communications, he found a job in Hanoi; however, after his father was hospitalised, he returned home to support the family.

Vuong himself has muscle atrophy in one arm following years of treatment for a congenital hemangioma. Meanwhile, the second son, Nguyen Dinh Quyen, 20, is battling heart problems.
The neighbours currently take turns bringing meals to the family.
Nguyen Van Binh, party secretary of Nghi Lam Commune, said this is the locality's poorest family. Local residents have assisted them, but it is still modest.

According to a Nghe An General Hospital doctor, Thong's treatment is very costly and would be prolonged.
