The newspaper presented VND 126.8 million in reader donations to Le Bao Ngoc on Friday, while philanthropists transferred more than VND 45 million directly to his family's bank account.
Ngoc's story was published by Dantri on July 10 after he scored 26 points in Vietnam's national high school graduation exam, including a perfect 10 in history, but feared he would have to give up his university dream because of financial hardship.
His mother died when he was in Grade 10, leaving him to live with relatives. After finishing the national exam, he worked as a construction labourer to save money for his studies.
Ngoc said the donations had given him the opportunity to continue his education and pledged to study hard in return for the support he had received.
Local officials thanked Dantri/DTiNews readers for their generosity, saying the financial support would help ease the family's burden and allow Ngoc to pursue higher education.
The donations followed an outpouring of support from readers after the newspaper shared Ngoc's story, helping ensure he can cover tuition and living expenses during his university years.
