Poor Hanoi family receives supports to build new house

Dantri/Dtinews reader donations and local support have helped a poor Dao family in Ba Vi Commune, Hanoi move from a makeshift shack into a solid new home.

After more than a month of construction, the new house of Trieu Duy Truong in Yen Son Village, Ba Vi Commune, Hanoi has been completed and handed over. Though modest in size, it marks a turning point for the young family, who had been living in a temporary shelter.

Previously, Truong, his wife and their young daughter lived in a makeshift structure built from bamboo, scrap wood and old tarpaulins. When it rained, water flooded the floor; in cold weather, draughts swept in from all sides.

After Dantri published an article detailing the family’s circumstances, readers donated more than VND 110 million (about USD 4,400).

With additional support from relatives, neighbours and the authorities in Ba Vi Commune, Truong was able to build a permanent brick house.

As the house was being completed, the family welcomed a healthy baby boy. The four family members now live together in their new, sturdy home.

Truong said that after spending time caring for his wife and newborn son, he plans to return to his job as a construction worker to provide for the family. He also grows medicinal plants and is expanding his livestock and poultry to supplement the household income.

“I would like to thank Dantri readers, the Ba Vi Commune authorities and our relatives and neighbours for their support and for helping us build a better life,” Truong said.

In response to the government’s campaign to eliminate temporary and dilapidated housing, Dantri has set a target of building 200 houses for poor and near poor households and families in hardship nationwide during 2024 and 2025.

Since April 2024, the newspaper has begun construction on 253 houses, of which 219 have been completed and handed over.

Alongside the housing initiative, Dantri has built 58 classrooms, 32 rural bridges and roads, and 50 floating houses for flood prone areas. It has organised 28 free medical consultation programmes for more than 6,000 people, donated 7,210 health insurance cards to poor pupils, and opened nearly 6,000 public appeals to support families in exceptional hardship.
