Nghiem Van Thi's daughter takes care of him at the hospital
His impoverished family is struggling to find the means to cover his medical expenses.
Nearly 20 days have passed since the incident, yet the 48-year-old man remains in critical condition, unconscious, at the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital in Hanoi.
His eldest daughter, Nghiem Thi Ngoc Anh, is by his side and caring for him.
"My father is illiterate and poor. My mother suffers from epilepsy. He worked as a construction worker, supporting us and my mother," Anh shared.
"He lost three fingers on his left hand in a workplace accident, which affected both his health and his ability to work. Now, after this devastating traffic accident, our family is desperate, with no means to afford his treatment," she added.
Anh recalled that on the day of the accident, her mother was so shocked that she fainted and is now in fragile health. Neighbours collected just over VND3 million to get her father to the hospital. The family's daily hospital expenses now range from VND15-20 million.
Speaking to Dantri, Dr Dang Hai Son from the Emergency Department at Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital provided an update on Thi's condition, "Nghiem Van Thi was admitted in a severe state with multiple injuries, including spinal trauma, brain injury, chest trauma with pleural effusion, pancreatic trauma, and a fractured lower right leg."
Dr Hai Son further stated that Thi remains in a coma and is receiving intensive care with mechanical ventilation. Once stabilised, he will undergo surgery on his right leg.
Thi is still in critical condition.
Encouraging signs have emerged, as his neurological responses have shown notable improvement, offering hope for recovery.
"However, his family is considering taking him home due to financial difficulties. We have been trying to persuade them to continue treatment while seeking financial support. He still needs surgery and extensive rehabilitation, which will be costly. We sincerely hope Dantri readers and benefactors can come together to give him a chance at survival," Dr Hai Son urged.
