The locusts, initially spotted in the fields of Nguyen Binh, Hoa An, and Thach An districts in late April, have now spread their devastation across a wider area, making the situation more dire.

Yellow-spined bamboo locusts have damaged up to 500 hectares of forest and crops in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang.


The locusts have harmed a wide range of crops. They have decimated around 315 hectares of bamboo, 6.4 hectares of rice, 24.81 hectares of maize, and several other crops.

The local Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the districts of Nguyen Binh, Hoa An and Thach An have sprayed pesticides against bamboo locusts on 116.24 hectares of affected crops.

Localities have been urged to take more drastic measures to deal with the insects as the peak time for bamboo locust development is from June to September.

Meanwhile, a plague of grasshoppers has damaged around 10 hectares of forest and plantation in the northern mountainous province of Lang Son's Binh Gia District.
