Y Nhieu was viciously beaten

Gia Lai People's Committee Chairman Vo Ngoc Thanh ordered the Department of Public Security to investigate the case on July 22. The Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs was asked to co-operate with the authorities in Pleiku City to support the victim.

The worker, Y Nhieu, was born in 1995 in Kon Tum Province. She came to the police department of Thong Nhat Ward to report the abuse by her employer. She is being treated at Dak Glei District Medical Centre for various injuries.

Nhieu said she worked at a cafe for the employer since 2014. The employer thought Nhieu was having an affair with her husband and often found an excuse to beat her. In early June, Nhieu was accused of stealing and had an iron put on her hand.

"My face was cut up. They even used hammer and plier to pull off my teeth and cut my ears. I have burn marks all over my body," Nhieu said.

Nhieu said she thought of escaping when the abuse first started but the employer threatened her with her family.

"She said I would see my mother's dead body if I tried to run away," she said.

On July 9-10, Nhieu was beaten unconscious. She then ran and hid along Ly Thai To Street, about 500 metres away from the employer's house. A passer-by found and brought her to the hospital.
