Wandering iguana handed over to Lam Dong rescue facility

A South American iguana has been handed over to a licensed wildlife facility in Lam Dong Province after being found wandering along a road.

The Ham Thuan Nam Forest Protection Department said it coordinated with authorities in Tien Thanh Ward to transfer the reptile to a legally authorised rescue and conservation facility operated by Dang Quan Dung in Hai Ninh Commune.

The facility, identified under licence code 43-26/B-LDG, is authorised to rescue, care for and conserve wildlife in accordance with Vietnamese law.

The iguana was discovered by Le Van Hai, 69, while he was travelling to work in Tien Thanh Ward. Hai brought the animal to local authorities after spotting it roaming on a roadside.

Forest rangers later worked with relevant agencies to inspect the animal and complete the required legal procedures.

Scientists identify the species as Iguana iguana, commonly known as the green iguana, a reptile native to South America and the Caribbean.

Adult green iguanas can grow to more than two metres in length and weigh up to around 9 kg. Their large size and rugged appearance have led many people to compare them to small dinosaurs.

The species is listed under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), meaning trade and ownership are subject to strict regulation.

While the species is not fully banned in Vietnam, owners must provide documentation proving legal origin, such as invoices or import permits, and register the animal with forest protection authorities.

Authorities encouraged the public to report and hand over lost, injured or sick wild animals to relevant agencies to support wildlife protection and biodiversity conservation efforts.
