VND 9 trln bridge proposed to span Duong River in Hanoi

A nearly VND 9 trillion (USD 340 million) bridge spanning the Duong River has been proposed in Hanoi to improve transport links in the capital's northeastern area.

Hanoi's Department of Finance has submitted a report to the municipal People's Committee on a proposal to build Giang Bien Bridge and connecting roads at both ends of the structure.

The project was proposed by a consortium comprising Hateco Group JSC, Giang Bien Construction Investment JSC and Dai Duong Xanh Construction Investment Consultancy JSC.

Under the proposal, the route would begin at Chu Huy Man Street and connect to the Hanoi-Gia Binh Airport road near the Gia Binh interchange.

The project would require about 26.2 hectares of land, including areas in Viet Hung and Phuc Loi wards and Phu Dong Commune.

According to the preliminary design, the route would extend about 5.49 kilometres, including a 4.85-kilometre main section and a 0.64-kilometre branch road linking to Giang Bien Port.

The urban arterial road would be designed for speeds of up to 80 kph and feature six traffic lanes, two mixed-traffic lanes, sidewalks and a central median.

The main bridge across the Duong River would stretch more than 2.3 kilometres.

Total investment is estimated at VND 8.94 trillion, including land clearance and construction costs, with completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2030.

According to Hanoi's Department of Finance, agencies and local authorities have broadly supported the proposal, saying the project would improve links between central Hanoi, areas north of the Red River and neighbouring provinces such as Bac Ninh and Lang Son.

The bridge is also expected to ease congestion on existing crossings over the Red and Duong rivers while supporting urban development, industrial growth, logistics activities and regional connectivity.
