“We welcome the recent proposal made on May 11 by Russian President Vladimir Putin to resume direct negotiations with Ukraine,” said spokesperson Pham Thu Hang in response to journalists’ question regarding Putin’s proposal.

She voiced Vietnam’s consistent position to support the settlement of disputes and disagreements through peaceful means, via dialogue, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, taking into account the legitimate interests of all relevant parties, for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world at large.

Putin said on May 11 proposed direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15 in an attempt to “eliminate the root causes of the conflict” and “to achieve the restoration of a long-term, lasting peace.”

The Russian President said that he would speak to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan about the talks, which he said could lead to a ceasefire.
