Vietnam to introduce AI education in schools nationwide

Vietnam will introduce artificial intelligence (AI) education across its school system from the 2026-27 academic year under a new framework issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

The plan was outlined in Decision No. 2422/QD-BGDDT, recently issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Under the framework, AI education will be divided into two components: a core programme and an extended programme.

The core component will comprise 12 lessons per class each academic year and is designed to provide students with essential AI knowledge and practical skills.

The extended component will be organised at the discretion of individual schools, allowing them to expand students’ understanding, creativity and AI-related competencies according to local conditions and educational needs.

Schools will be allowed to determine the most suitable teaching methods based on the AI education framework, the availability of teaching staff, facilities, and the needs and capabilities of their students.

Educational institutions will also be responsible for selecting and reviewing AI tools that are appropriate for students’ ages, educational objectives and terms of use.

The ministry said schools must promptly report any incidents related to the use of AI tools to the relevant authorities.

The initiative forms part of Vietnam’s broader efforts to strengthen digital skills and prepare students for an economy increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
