Nguyen Phuong Nga provided the information yesterday, August 10, in reply to reporters’ queries on Vietnam-US cooperation in nuclear energy.
She said the agreement on civil nuclear cooperation, also called Agreement 123, covers the US’s transfer of information relating to nuclear materials, equipment and technology to other countries to ensure that nuclear weapons are not proliferated.
Vietnam strongly supported and actively contributed to world nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, Nga said.
While a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Vietnam was speeding up the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purpose, she said.
Nga said Vietnam had always been committed to fully implementing its obligations under the treaty, and many nations and organisations appreciated this effort
Civil nuclear technology had been applied on a small scale in the country’s health, agriculture and scientific research.
Nga said Vietnam was willing to expand international co-operation on the use of nuclear energy to provide power.
Vietnam has signed bilateral nuclear co-operation agreements with Russia, China, France, India, S.Korea and Argentina. It also signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear energy cooperation with the US in March this year.
