An additional 15,959 Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Vietnam on Wednesday including 38 more Omicron infections, the Ministry of Health has reported.
According to the ministry's report, 15,936 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 61 out of 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,909), Danang (892), Khanh Hoa (652), Thanh Hoa (628), Tra Vinh (603), and Hung Yen (568). There were 23 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed a decrease of 827 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 10,460 infections found in the community.
As of Wednesday evening, 2,071,658 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (511,950), Binh Duong (292,950), Dong Nai (99,465), Hanoi (97,026), and Tay Ninh (86,314). Vietnam has so far confirmed 108 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 2,078,087. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 19, an additional 33,034 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,789,188.
On Wednesday evening, a further 142 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 36,114. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including Dong Thap (16), Kien Giang (12), Vinh Long (11), and Ben Tre (10).
Vietnam on January 18 administered 1.56 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 171.63 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 72.94 million people having received two doses.
