Vietnam’s central localities have been battered by powerful storms, Kajiki and Bualoi, since late August, resulting in severe loss of life, property damage, and infrastructure destruction.
Two days after a devastating tornado swept through Hoang Phu Commune in Thanh Hoa Province, Le Thi Hai, 44, in Hao Nam Village, was still in shock. Standing silently before the rubble of what had once been her home and rice-milling workshop for more than a decade, she said with tearful eyes, “I still can’t believe it’s real. Everything happened so fast, and now my family has been left with nothing.”

“A few years ago, my husband and I borrowed nearly VND 500 million (around USD 20,000) to buy machinery. Before we could repay the loan, the storm swept it all away. Now the house is gone, the debt remains, and I don’t know how to start over,” Hai said, tears rolling down her weathered cheeks.
The tiled house of Le Dinh Hai, 62, in the village, was destroyed by a tornado. “Our rice and the house are gone, leaving nothing behind. We’ve truly lost everything,” Hai said.
According to the Hoang Phu Commune People’s Committee, as of the morning of October 1, the tornado had severely damaged 412 houses and destroyed 31 others.
Le Van Cuong, Chairman of Hoang Phu Commune, stated that residents had never experienced such a devastating disaster. He appealed for support.
Lang Thi Loi’s family from Tuong Duong Commune in Nghe An Province is a victim of the typhoon. The dilapidated house was the family’s only asset, but the storm swept it away.

Next to Loi’s house, Luong Thi Pieng’s home also collapsed into a ravine, leaving only part of the foundation and half the kitchen. About 500 metres away, the families of Luong Thi Duyen and Quang Thi Bun met the same fate, left homeless after the flood.
Meanwhile, in Ha Tinh Province’s Mai Phu Commune, Typhoon Bualoi caused heavy damage, with 6,331 houses damaged, with the household of Le Van Nam being the worst-hit.
Preliminary figures indicate that Typhoon Bualoi has severely damaged over 3,000 houses across the three provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh, with many of them completely destroyed. Two consecutive storms have left residents exhausted and unable to recover on their own.
