Storm Matmo forecast to enter Gulf of Tonkin early next week

Storm Matmo is predicted to hit the Gulf of Tonkin on October 6 with powerful intensity.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Storm Matmo may enter the East Sea this evening, October 3, becoming the eleventh storm in the area. Once it does, the typhoon may intensify steadily.

The centre said that early on October 3, Storm Matmo was over the eastern waters of Luzon Island in the Philippines, with maximum winds of 75–88 km/h, gusting to 11, moving west-northwest at around 25 km/h.

In the early hours of October 5, the storm was over the north-western part of the northern East Sea, about 340 km east-southeast of the Leizhou Peninsula (China), packing winds of level 12 with gusts up to level 15. It was moving west-northwest at 20-25 km/h and was expected to strengthen further.

At 1 am on October 6, the storm was over the northern Gulf of Tonkin with winds of level 11, gusting to level 14, moving west-northwest.

In the next 72 to 120 hours, the storm is forecast to move mainly west-northwest at 15-20 km per hour, gradually weakening in intensity.
