Two-metre oarfish washes ashore in Danang

A nearly two-metre oarfish weighing about 10 kilogrammes washed ashore in Danang on Wednesday, attracting crowds of residents who stopped to watch and take photographs.

The management board of Son Tra Peninsula and Danang Tourist Beaches said the fish was discovered along the coast of An Hai Ward earlier in the day.

Local fishermen spotted the carcass drifting towards shore near a row of seaside restaurants and alerted authorities.

The silvery fish, measuring close to two metres, had bluish spots along its body, a reddish dorsal fin and long whisker-like filaments beneath its head.

Officials later identified it as an oarfish (Regalecus), considered the world’s longest bony fish and typically found in deep ocean waters.
