Trans-Vietnam cycle race planned for Hanoi's birthday

Cyclists will contest a 17-day trans-Vietnam race for the 1,000th anniversary of Hanoi-Thang Long.

The 1,500km 14-stage race from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi would begin on Thursday, September 23, and end on Saturday, October 9, Vietnam Cycling Federation general secretary Doan Kim Phach said yesterday.

The last time-trial would be held around Hoan Kiem Lake to celebrate the millennium city and the 56th anniversary of Hanoi\'s liberation on October 10th.

"It\'s the biggest race of the year with the country\'s eyes on the great celebration of Hanoi," he said.

"We have invited foreign riders to compete and this will provide an opportunity for Vietnamese cyclists to hone their skills.

"Malaysia has agreed to take part in the event and we expect more powerhouses to join a tough race," he said.

About 100 cyclists from 13 domestic teams as well as squads of South Korea, Mongolia, the Philippines were likely to compete.

"We hope to make the race part of festivals to be held in the city," general secretary Phach said.

The race organising committee will provide special awards to the yellow jersey or overall winner; green jersey, best sprinter; red jersey, \'King of Mountain,\' and white jersey, best young cyclist.
