Traffic accidents kill nearly 100,000 people in Vietnam

The Ministry of Public Security has completed a report to review the 10-year implementation of the Law on Road Traffic.

According to the report, between 2009 and May this year, the police found 53.5 traffic violations and issued fines of VND24 trillion (USD1.1 billion); revoked 3.4 million driving licenses and detained 15.3 million vehicles.

The report showed the number of private vehicles increased by 10-15% annually in the big cities of Hanoi, HCM City, Haiphong and Danang.

By April this year, some 4.1 million cars and 60 million motorbikes were registered nationwide.

Over the past decade, the country witnessed 326,299 road traffic accidents, killing 97,721 people and wounding 329,756 others.

“Nearly 10,000 people in Vietnam die of traffic accidents every year on average with the majority of them of working age,” the ministry said.

As many as 18,736 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam in 2018, leaving 8,248 dead and 14,802 injured.

The country has set a target to cut the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries by 5-10% this year.
