A representative from My Thuan Project Management Unit, the project investor, said that around 400 engineers and workers have been arranged for the project’s resumption. They will work in shifts and stay at the construction site to ensure Covid-19 prevention and control regulations during the city’s social distancing period.

The project is being carried out in two phases. In the first phase, it completed the upgrading of runway 25R/07L. The project’s second phase focuses on the construction and upgrading of eight taxiways and building a drainage system, taxiway lights and aviation signboards.
The project is scheduled to be completed before December 31 this year.
The project was halted from August 5 after 27 Covid-19 cases were detected on the construction site. Since August 13, no more staff have been infected with the virus.
Following the Ministry of Transport’s proposal to add the project into the list of urgent works, HCM City authorities agreed to reactivate it. Tan Binh District has been assigned to co-operate with concerned agencies to facilitate customs procedures for the project’s equipment import.
The project which has a total investment of VND2 trillion (USD86.95 million) was started in July last year along with the runway upgrade at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport.
Tan Son Nhat International Airport was designed to serve 25 million passengers per year by 2020, but in reality, the figure reached over 40 million in 2017. Since 2017, the airport's runways have seriously deteriorated.
