Sinkhole opens on Danang street, swallowing parked cars

A large sinkhole opened on Nguyen Cong Tru Street in Danang on Wednesday afternoon, swallowing two cars and damaging another.

A section of Nguyen Cong Tru Street in the central city of Danang collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, creating a sinkhole that swallowed several cars parked nearby.

The incident occurred at around 2 pm, when the road suddenly gave way near the junction with Ngo Quyen Street. The sinkhole, about half the width of the carriageway and roughly two metres deep, opened along the right side of the road.

The collapse happened next to an under-construction project. Two cars fell completely into the hole, while another was left teetering with its rear wheels hanging over the edge. The damaged section extended close to the road’s centre line, posing a serious risk to passing traffic.

Residents said cracks had appeared on the road days earlier and that similar subsidence had been seen on nearby Ngo Quyen Street. It was raining at the time, and they reported hearing a loud noise before the ground gave way.

An Hai Ward officials were deployed to manage the emergency response. Ward chairman Hoang Cong Thanh said no injuries were reported and that the affected area measured about 20-30 metres.

The ward has secured the site and is working with relevant agencies to determine the cause.

Nguyen Ha Nam, director of the city’s Department of Construction, also inspected the scene and instructed further remedial action.
