The northern province of Quang Ninh’s inspection task force found two ships discharging a total amount of 300 cubic mestres of mud into Ha Long Bay on November 21.

The two ships found for discharging mud into Halong Bay
One ship was run by Le Van Cuong in Haiphong City’s Le Chan District, and the other by Bui Van Duy in Haiphong City’s Thuy Nguyen District.
Cuong said he was hired by Tan Viet Ltd. Co. in Haiphong City to transport the mud from Cai Lan Port to Bai Dong Island in Halong Bay.
The ships were fined and taken to the Ben Doan area in Ha Long City.
Bai Dong Island is at the centre of Ha Long Bay, where there is strict protection on waste discharge and other encroachment activities. However, this is not the first time local authorities detected such violations.
According to the management board of Halong Bay, whenever Cai Lan Port dredged, some ships transported mud from the port to Ha Long Bay. Cai Lan Port management board hired several companies for the dredging activities.
Halong Bay's management board proposed that Cai Lan Port be more responsible for the dredging to avoid further pollution at Ha Long Bay. The case is being further investigated.
